About

As I have taken a greater interest in SUP racing I have searched the Internet for resources to help. From tips on technique, training plans, nutrition and more, I’ve attempted to learn more to improve my paddling skills.

Some questions I had had quick-to-find answers. Some took a little more digging. And some questions I haven’t had answered yet.

As I gather information I’d like to pass it on, after practice and reflection, in the hope that what I have discovered might be of some help to other improving SUP race paddlers seeking to up their game.

paddlewombat.com is a personal project from Jonathan Sherwin.

This is an experiment. I used to write much more than I do now. I used to blog. I used to journal. I wrote magazine articles. Writing turned out to be, in many ways, a bit of emotional health-check for me, a reflection of how I was doing. If I couldn’t write it would often be because of some unresolved inner turmoil. At the same time, writing could be cathartic. But I stopped writing.

And now I find myself consuming far more than I create. Life can bring stresses, anxiety, grief … and these can threaten to overwhelm. Distractions became sought after. Streaming TV, Social Media, or a glass of wine are all within easy reach and all able to ‘take the edge off’, quiet the inner chatter, for a short while at least.

And so I’m choosing to write. I’m choosing to contribute. I’m choosing to chase joy. I’m choosing to doubt the negative thoughts that I shouldn’t, couldn’t, ought-not-to write on this subject.

Because I like paddling. Because I learn from reflection. Because this might help someone starting out, just as I started out SUP racing in 2021.

Thanks for your interest in my project.
